I guess one of the nicest things about blogging is the fact that you can actually earn passive income. The first time i heard about this was from a youtube video posting which i accidentally discovered while wandering the cyberspace for hours. The video was an interview of Mr Abe Olandres (owner of YugaTech.com) and J.Angelo Racoma (www.racoma.com.ph) who both were featured on Mel and Joey’ segment of last year’s topic …. something which goes “earning money through blogging” or something close to that.

Looking at the video above, I must admit, i was really fascinated how these two were able to earn sufficient funds through blogging. After this discovery, i tried to research this topic across the vast resources of internet and to my surprise, many have started this bandwagon already. Hmmmm, funny, i thought… so am late bloomer afterall… haha, o well better late than never right ? =)
Blogging History
TechRONnati is actually not my first blog. I first discovered blogging as a hobby way back in the year 2005. I was inspired by a former bank officemate, a QA analyst who also enjoys blogging. During my tenure to the company, internet was limited to only junior officers at the office, hence those rank and file employees like me would only find time to blog right after office hours or when a free PC was available at the kiosks. The luxury of time to blog was my first enemy! I had to travel my way from Ayala Makati-Philippines all the way to my home in Ortigas for 2 hours so by the time i would have reached home i would have been exhausted and sleepy already. And as i went along the way, I neglected updating my blog due to the demands of work, research assignments at school and other personal matters.
Then, just about 3 months ago, I started researching about alternative income sources. With the surging oil prices and skyrocketing rice prices, one must be able to cope up with it. I must admit, though, i am still hesitant to resign from my current post and comfort zone at the office because i like the environment and the kind of people i am working with plus the fact that the office is a 15-minute ride from where i used to live. The convenience and the benefits of staying is at stake if i intended to resign although looking for a better job with a fatter paycheck is also a possible option. I was thinking of working part-time too which boiled down to 3 choices: Blogging, Mentoring, or Investing. Then eventually, little that i know that blogging can actually generate passive income. I guess I would just try my luck first here in the blogging world if this is really for me, so as to test the waters, they say. I’ve come across a long list of websites, all discussing about the facets and the trends of money making online. And i can see a warm crowd of enthusiasts who also says blogging is also their passion. It is interesting to note how potential is the internet these days as people are learning now how to chat and transact online. Fortunately, I was able to save some of those interesting topics to my portable hard disk so i can refer back anytime when deemed necessary. These bloggers i came to know and stumbled upon in the cyberspace became my inspiration to create my own portal => Link and so the rest they say is history. =)
Setting up the blog
Three months ago, i was still contemplating whether i would be venturing into blogging or not. But because i was inspired with a lot of positive feedbacks and reviews coming from a lot of bloggers around the blogosphere and probloggers, i immediately registered for a free account at wordpress.com. The greatest challenge was arriving a creative Blog Title. I was cynical and meticulously oriented at first … thinking of something worth catchy, creative, original and meaningful for my title. Good thing was i was able to get it polished and was happy to deliver it (pardon me for bragging it out too much, hehe=) ) (see this article: THE BIRTH OF TECHRONNATI). =) Then probably a week after was actually when my blog became feasible and visible to general public.
For the last two months of having my first blog with wordpress, i established a fair share of internet traffic to my blog…Not as big as the ones with big names already. But hopefully we would go to that direction eventually. Who knows what could happen right? Anything can happen! =)
Deciding to eventually monetize my blog was my next move. I began by reading a lot of articles including Steve Pavlina’s article on how to make money from blogging. Also, Abe Olandres’ site and JRacoma’s blog both became my role model sites. I am a blog hopper myself. I try to modify the best theme available in the market to match my taste and ingenuity hence what you actually see in this website is a modified version already of the template i got from the net plus i incorporated other web features. =) Also, to add some ads, I registered to Google Adsense, Payperpost, Adbrite, TextLinkAds, SocialPark to make my webpage interactive =)
Self-Hosted Blog or not?
Each passing day, I am learning something new. I decided to browse and add some advertisers to my free blog hosted in wordpress to start earning. Too bad, free wordpress account limits google adsense and some javascript tags on widgets. Isn’t it silly? O well thats the only disadvantge i can think of about free hosted service. I didn’t know it at first hence, i decided to try blogger, the free service arm of google. Fortunately, it is as easy and as basic as Wordpress. I got the chance to pull some of my html/css/xml and dhtml hidden skills which fortunately i am able to utilize it now. But as i move forward, there’s something in wordpress worth appealing, probably the look and feel of wordpress themes which is crispy, clean and organized which made me love wordpress again. I decided not to stay longer with blogger (or maybe i could to utilize it for some of my personal projects at hand =) ) and that’s the moment i decided also to finally buy and host my own domain.
Blog up and running
Techronnati.com is my first official blog. I tried to migrate everything from wordpress account to self-hosted wordpress account in the span of two weeks. Yes, a little longer than i expected. I was meticuously into web layout or the look and feel of my website. I came across a myriad theme templates which i experimented one by one. I got the chance to use dreamweaver cs3 for adjusting some of the layout’s codes and scripts. I am new to PHP language but as i see it i think its easier enough to understand knowing that i have a background in programming. Did i tell you am a programmer? Yep, I am!
Fortunately i could understand some basic php scripts and syntax which hopefully switching my role to web developer coming from a notes/domino background =) hehe. I was lucky enough to learn other PHP frameworks and Mysql db. A lot of room for self-improvement! Since i got the basic html/javascript and css skills already, i think i can adjust running this self-hosted blog myself. I dont have much fund at hand, hence i am resorting to advertising too as my form of income too. i have a lot of ideas to relay and thoughts about blog expansion but for the meantime, i try to focus for what i am intended for i.e. share about my ideas, knowledge and reviews about technology and business in general. I can talk more about my plans for this blog in the next succeeding posts but in the end, what i really want is to collaborate and become a networking tool to connect to other bloggers. If I can generate some revenue from this blog, indeed that would be great.
